Consultation launched on White City redevelopment

8 Apr 11 Plans to redevelop the White City area of west London to help deliver 4,500 new homes have been published for consultation by the Mayor of London.

Over the next 15 to 20 years the White City Opportunity Area, which includes areas of under-used land on the eastern edge of the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham near the Westfield shopping centre are set to be regenerated into new residential areas.

Working in close partnership the Borough, the Mayor wants to deliver thousands of affordable homes and new community facilities.

Building on the presence of key organisations such as the BBC, Imperial College and Hammersmith Hospital, the aim is also to encourage economic growth by developing the area into a hub for the creative, media and bio-tech industries that will create the new jobs.

Details of the plans for White City are published in the White City Opportunity Area Planning Framework, which proposes a raft of measures to encourage social, economic and environmental regeneration of the area.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, said: "Once a part of London’s Olympic history, the home of greyhound racing and more recently BBC Television Centre, White City has seen great change over the years. While previous generations of planners have not always left their mark in a positive way, with this new framework we have the chance to build on the area’s rich heritage with exciting new green spaces, thousands of new affordable homes and an inspiring new hub for creative and high-tech industries."

A development infrastructure funding study will be undertaken in the coming months to examine the likely cost of infrastructure outlined in the framework. The study will establish the reasonable level of financial contributions that can be expected from private development, and will inform a more detailed delivery strategy which will form part of the next draft for public consultation.
