Contractors called for £600m Northern Line extension

20 Mar 13 The competition to build London’s next great tunnelling project has begun with London Underground (LU) publishing a contract notice for its planned Northern Line extension.

Construction work with an estimated value of £400m to £600m is up for grabs, with a published start date of January 2014.

The project, which will take six years to complete, will deliver a new tube line from Kennington to Battersea. Work includes 3.3km of new running tunnels.

New tube stations are planned for the Battersea power station site and for Nine Elms, where huge redevelopment is planned over the next 20 years with up to 16,000 homes being built.

LU describes this Northern Line extension as a complex project to be carried out in one of the busiest areas of London, in the vicinity of major road junctions, through routes for traffic and involving one of the busiest underground lines.

Requests to participate in the tender need to be submitted by 15 April 2013.
