Costain awards Skanska £92m tunnels subcontract

5 Jan 11 Skanska has been given a contract woth £92m to construct tunnels for power cables in London.

The contract was awarded by Costain, which is installing 33km of high-voltage electricity cable tunnels for National Grid between Hackney and Willesden and between Kensal Green and Wimbledon in southwest London. The cable tunnels are 3m and 4m in diameter, will help provide continued safe and secure electricity supplies for central London.

Skanska will also build access shafts and head houses for electrical equipment.

Construction work begins in 2011 and tunneling is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2014. The entire project with all associated works is scheduled for completion during 2018.

Costain and Skanska are familiar partners. They are working in joint venture on the Crossrail project.
