Crumbs for construction

21 Mar 12 Construction union Ucatt has described today’s budget as “bad news for construction”, offering the industry merely “a few crumbs”

Ucatt general secretary Steve Murphy said: “Today we saw the true colours of this government - tax cuts for the wealthiest while workers are facing an ever greater squeeze on their living standards. This is not about fairness this is all about privilege.”

Mr Murphy added: “This budget was bad news for construction. The government is the construction industries biggest client. The industry is crying out for significant government investment in new projects in order to help get construction workers back to work. All that the industry received today were a few additional crumbs.”

RMT general secretary Bob Crow went further, predicting civil unrest. “This budget unleashes savage cuts to jobs, wages, welfare and services in the public sector while pandering to the private greed of those same people who dragged us into this economic crisis,” Mr Crowe said. “It will spark an upsurge in protest and resistance across the country as the vast majority realise that they have been mugged by this government of the wealthy elite.”
