Cuddy’s award-winning strategy beats economic downturn

21 Apr 11 Multi-disciplined contractor Cuddy Group has been presented with a major award that reflects the company’s consistently strong performance throughout a challenging time for the construction industry.

Cuddy beat six other finalist to win the title of ‘Demolition Contractor of the Year’ at this year’s Specialist Awards. It comes after a highly successful 12 months for the Neath-based company, during which time it has faced the economic downturn head-on with an innovative programme of investment. By devoting £2.4 million to new plant, increasing employee levels by 5% (an industry high), launching a major new division and maintaining one of the highest turnovers in the industry, Cuddy has remained focused on a continued growth programme and overcome market confidence issues.

In assessing the award submissions, the judges looked at Cuddy’s client focus, business performance, dedication to training and safety and project success over the past year; notably for its continued role in the St Modwen’s brownfield regeneration of the 1,060 acre former BP oil refinery site in Coed Darcy, West Wales.

An important development for Cuddy over the last 12 months has been the formation of its land remediation division. By offering a complete site regeneration service to clients and a coordinated approach to all projects, the remediation team is now regularly working on contracts ranging from £1 million to £6 million, and has developed a strong reputation and foothold in the sector.

Commenting on the award win, Cuddy Group managing director, Mike Cuddy said: “We have always worked hard to maintain a continuous investment in health and safety, staff development and sustainability. Clients want to invest their trust in hard-working, dependable and technically capable companies and this award is welcome recognition of our ability to fulfil these requirements.

“Whilst we are obviously very proud of this achievement for our demolition division, our continued business success is largely due to the fact that we now offer a complete regeneration service comprising everything from asbestos removal and demolition to land remediation and civil engineering. I look forward to the other areas of the business growing to achieve the same level of recognition as demolition.”

Over the next 18 months, Cuddy Group plans to continue with its ambitious growth strategy. In particular, it will further strengthen its international presence to reflect the demand from overseas for its expertise in delivering technically difficult projects.
