Decorators plan industry training programme

15 Feb 13 The Painting & Decorating Association (PDA) is seeking industry views on training needs after securing funding for an industry programme.

The PDA wants industry input to help shape the content of a large-scale training initiative that will help contractors and address a future skills shortage.

To ensure the best use of the funding from the CITB ConstructionSkills Growth Fund, the PDA is doing comprehensive research that will be used to develop a national training plan.

Chief executive Neil Ogilvie said: “At a time when there are so few opportunities across the UK construction and maintenance industry for training development, our partnership with CITB ConstructionSkills offers a much needed opportunity to deliver support to businesses in our sector.

Training boosts the morale of staff, increases their productivity and gives an organisation the competitive advantage it needs in these tough economic conditions.

“The support and utilisation of the whole sector training and development project is paramount in generating the right skills for future growth and preventing a shortage in the skills available to the industry.

“By working with decorating professionals and industry training providers, the PDA will ultimately be able to supply relevant courses, held in specific areas, at a time which suits members.”

CITB-ConstructionSkills chief executive Mark Farrar said that the PDA’s training initiative would be “the first step in facilitating change and helping companies within the industry to improve business performance, retrain and up-skill employees”.
