Derby police investigate spate of plant thefts

15 Nov 11 Police are investigating a series of thefts of construction plant in south Derbyshire.

The latest theft happened some time between 6pm on Monday, November 14 and 8am this morning. A JCB mini-digger was taken from a building site in Main Street, Weston-on-Trent.

Between 7.30pm and 8.20pm on Monday, November 14, thieves broke into a compound off Bretby Road East, Swadlincote, before taking a skip loader and a tipper, both Leyland DAF. The tipper was carrying a mini-digger on the back.

At around 6.30pm on Wednesday, November 9, a police officer was driving through Willington when he saw a digger and became suspicious. He pulled the driver over in High Street and began to question him, but the driver ran off.

It was later discovered that the digger had been stolen from a compound in Uttoxeter Road, Foston. The thief is described as being aged between his late 30s and early 50s. He was scruffy in appearance and had short dark hair. He was of large build and around 5ft 8ins tall.
