Downing gets approval to start £75m Cambridge build

15 Feb 13 Developer Downing has received planning permission for a 354-bedroom student accommodation development in Cambridge.

The plans are part of a £75m scheme comprising three six-storey blocks with 586 bedrooms. Work is due to start on site in spring 2013 and complete in autumn 2014.

Designed by architect Falconer Chester Hall, the accommodation will comprise a mixture of cluster flats and studios with shops on the ground floor.

The building aims to achieve a BREEAM rating of Excellent, using photovoltaic roof panels to generate part of its power.

The accommodation forms part of the wider CB1 regeneration scheme of Cambridge railway station and the surrounding areas and includes the development of residential apartments, commercial space, retail and hotel space, restaurants and bars.

Downing development director Paul Houghton said: “Downing has delivered a number of high-profile student accommodation schemes to cities across the UK and we are pleased to bring this high-quality development to Cambridge.”
