The tram project was originally scheduled for completion in August 2011 but has been hit by delays and overspend.
An independent mediator agreed by all parties is chairing the talks, which started this week. Also at the table is Edinburgh Trams, the project client vehicle set up by the council.
A statement from Edinburgh Trams said that mediation talks would be “carried out in private and complete confidentiality has been agreed by all parties (as is normal in any mediation proceedings) to provide the greatest chance of success and we will be honouring that commitment throughout the process”.
Richard Jeffrey, chief executive of Edinburgh Trams, said: “Mediation is a critical juncture for the tram project and I am confident that all parties can work together to find a way forward. While we understand that there is a lot of interest in the process it is vital that it is carried out in private in order for us to gain the best deal possible for the city and all those involved have agreed to maintain a policy of confidentiality throughout.”
