Mr Fallon will have a desk in the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) with minister of state rank, as well as his desk at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills.

In both departments he will be the senior Conservative minister keeping an eye on Liberal Democrat secretaries of state.

At DECC he takes over from John Hayes, who had his own run-ins with energy secretary Ed Davey over wind power. Mr Hayes has been named minister without portfolio in the Cabinet Office – a role that is being interpreted as liaison between the Conservatives in government and its parliamentary backbenchers.

Michael Fallon said: “Both departments share a strong focus on business and the economy and I am delighted to be given the opportunity to build on their cross cutting work on this agenda.
