Environment Agency tickles market for £275m Thames programme

8 Feb 22 The Environment Agency has published a prior information notice (PIN) to generate interest among Tier 2 and SME contractors for planned flood defence work along the River Thames in Surrey.

The Environment Agency, in collaboration with Surrey County Council, has issued a PIN to find organisations to take part in market engagement exercises ahead of the formal procurement process starting next year.

“We are seeking feedback from the supply market to help us shape our current strategy, design, contracting and risk management proposals to ensure delivery in the most efficient and effective way,” the PIN says.

Draft design proposals and procurement plans have been prepared for the project, which will involve the construction of two new flood relief channels being created at Runnymede and Spelthorne, as well as weir improvements at Sunbury, Molesey and Teddington. Further capacity improvement works are also planned at the Desborough Cut.

The value of the design and construction works is expected to be approximately £250m to £275m.

The market engagement exercise will be carried out in phases, starting in July, with each phase having a different focus.

River Thames Scheme project director Jeanne Capey said: “This is a huge opportunity not only for the civil engineering and construction sector, but also for small and medium businesses in Surrey and the surrounding area. This engagement will enable companies to help shape the future of this project and I would urge any firms interested in the River Thames Scheme to get involved and sign up.”
