Ferrovial lands €500m waste plant contracts

13 Mar 12 Gran Canaria Island Council has awarded contracts to manage the Salto del Negro and Juan Grande waste treatment plants to a joint venture of Ferrovial Services subsidiary Cespa and local company Ayaguares.

The two contracts together exceed €500m (£418m).

Cespa will implement processes to harness landfill biogas for energy. Both plants will be equipped with wind turbines and roof-top solar photovoltaic panels, among other technologies.

Ferrovial Services CEO Santiago Olivares said: "We are very pleased to have been awarded these two contracts in Gran Canaria. The Salto del Negro plant will serve more than 500,000 people. Cespa will build, operate and maintain the existing and planned works for this plant, which will serve more than 500,000 residents in 13 municipalities. The plant will treat close to 390,000t of waste each year. The 17.5-year contract is worth €240.5m.

The Cespa and Ayaguares joint venture will build, operate and maintain the Juan Grande waste treatment plant for 19.5 years; the contract is valued at €261.7m. When construction is completed in 2013, the plant will serve eight municipalities with more than 319,000 residents and will have an annual treatment capacity of close to 300,000t of waste.
