Fire Door Inspection Scheme prepares for launch

18 Mar 11 The Fire Door Inspection Scheme is set to launch in May, offering the UK’s first professional training and individual certification scheme for the fire door industry.

The Fire Door Inspection Scheme is a result of the partnership between the BWF-CERTIFIRE Scheme and the Guild of Architectural Ironmongers. Responding to industry demand for a more professional approach, an online training programme will be launched. This will lead to a Diploma in Fire Doors qualification and, for those wishing to take their training further official certification of fire door inspectors.

The Diploma will provide a stepping stone for anyone who wants to become a certified fire door inspector, but will also provide a recognised professional qualification in its own right, offering a thorough understanding of fire doors and their components. Exova Warrington Certification is working with the Fire Door Inspection Scheme to assess and approve fire door inspectors.

Stuart Young has been appointed as project manager for the Fire Door Inspection Scheme. Formerly MD of Allan Brothers, Stuart was an active member of the BWF Executive Committee between 1990 and 2001, and also acted as treasurer for nine years.

“There is increasing awareness and emphasis on ensuring fire doors are correctly installed, correctly used and correctly maintained,” says Stuart.

“This scheme intends to address a lack of knowledge by formalising an education process and recognising people with the most relevant skills and experience. I’m thrilled to be involved in delivering the package and making an impact on this important issue. This diploma will directly help to save lives.”
