FOAMGLAS offers a nutcracking solution

7 Mar 11 Pittsburgh Corning's FOAMGLAS cellular glass insulation has been used in the construction of the Scottish Ballet Headquarters, as it is impervious to moisture, non-combustible and has proven environmental credentials.

The new building replaced a derelict section of the Tramway Arts Centre on the Southside of Glasgow.

The new Scottish Ballet Headquarters comprises three levels. Technical workshops at ground level administration, wardrobe and music departments on the first floor and three large rehearsal studios situated on the top floor. Large concrete stairs were built to connect the existing foyer to a new social space at the heart of the building.

Malcolm Fraser Architects specified 130mm FOAMGLAS cellular glass insulation W + F slab and PC164 Adhesive. Clive Albert, Project Architect from Malcolm Fraser Architects commented on why Pittsburgh Corning offered the ideal solution:

“FOAMGLAS cellular glass insulation was a product that could provide the high levels of environmental and fire performance credentials required for the project. The fact that it is also totally impervious to any moisture also meant that once the FOAMGLAS was installed, there was no need to use a vapour barrier, which saved time on site. With a project this big, we wanted to be sure we were using products that would stand the test of time and because the insulation is inert - it should last the lifetime of the build.”

Growing in popularity for its eco credentials, FOAMGLAS cellular glass insulation utilises 68% recycled glass – combined with silica sand and a small element of carbon. When a building reaches the end of its service life any waste is deemed as non-hazardous with the option of material recovery allowing recycling into new slabs

Pittsburgh Corning has a complete range of cellular glass insulation products that have achieved BRE Green Guide Ratings of A+ and A providing specifiers with essential environmental impact information to help support the selection process.
