Four design contracts awarded for HS2

10 Apr 12 Mott Macdonald, Atkins, Capita Symonds Ineco JV and Arup have each picked up one of the four design contracts for the proposed high speed railway between London and Birmingham.

Project developer HS2 Ltd awarded the contracts under lot 1 of its professional services framework covering civil and structural design services.

Mott Macdonald has the ‘London Metropolitan Area’ design contract, valued at £13.2m. This is for the design of approximately 25km of new high speed rail line from the redeveloped Euston station through northwest London. It will also work on the link to HS1 and a new 14 platform interchange station at Old Oak Common.

Atkins has the ‘Country South’ contract, valued at £13.3m. This covers the design of approximately 91km of the route through Buckinghamshire, Northamptonshire and Oxfordshire, which includes the Colne Valley viaduct and the Chilterns tunnelling.

Capita Symonds Ineco JV’s ‘Country North’ contract, valued at £11.1m, covers 78km through Warwickshire and Staffordshire, and the connection to the West Coast Main Line.

Arup’s £11.4m ‘West Midland Metropolitan Area’ design contract for is for the northernmost 22km of the route. It also includes the Curzon Street Station complex, Birmingham Interchange Station, Washwood Heath rolling stock maintenance depot, and a people mover from the Interchange station to the NEC/Birmingham airport.

The four companies will prepare preliminary designs and work closely with HS2 Ltd, rail systems designers, environmentalists and land referencing companies. The designs will be used to inform the hybrid bill documents that are due to be submitted to Parliament by the end of 2013.
