The scheme will see Ringway improve the A6004 junction, complete the town’s inner relief road and then pedestrianise the town centre.

The contractor previously worked on the Loughborough Eastern Gateway project, improving the area around town’s railway station.

According to the schedule, work on the inner relief road will start first, with through-traffic transferring to it by spring 2014. Work to pedestrianise the town centre is expected to start in spring 2014 and be completed by early 2015.

Client for the project is Leicestershire County Council.

Local transport minister Norman Baker said: “This important scheme will help to reduce traffic demand on the town centre road network and help regenerate the town encouraging economic growth and inward investment. It will improve public transport facilities and improve accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists and people with disabilities.”
