HMP Rye Hill is a category B prison in the village of Willoughby, near Rugby in Warwickshire, holding convicted male sex offenders.
It was built in 2001 and current capapicty is 664 convicts. The construction of a new custodial facility at Rye Hill by Galliford Try will increase its capacity by 462 to 1,126.
This is one of four prison expansion projects announced by the government in October 2020, totalling (at that time) £200m. The Rye Hill project was supposed to have been completed by winter 2022, so there has clearly been slippage as the contract award is only now being announced.
HMP Rye Hill is a privately run prison, is managed by Onley Prison Services and operated by G4S Care & Justice Services, on behalf of the Ministry of Justice (MoJ).
Galliford Try chief executive Bill Hocking said: "The custodial sector remains an important part of our sustainable growth strategy, targeting high-quality projects within the public realm. We look forward to working with G4S and the MoJ to deliver this expansion to HMP Rye Hill, improving facilities for staff, prisoners and visitors."
