GECCO2 Secures Micro Certification Scheme (MCS) Installation

17 Feb 11 Qualifying for Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI)

GECCO2 has secured the contract for a new Ground Source Heat Pump (GSHP) installation, which will benefit from the Government’s Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme. It is anticipated that the

RHI scheme will generate £850m of investment and aims to drive a ten-fold increase in low carbon renewable heating schemes over the coming decade. The installation, at Batts Hall, Knowle, just outside Solihull, comprises a 60kw twin compressor heat pump serving under floor heating and pre heated domestic hot water in conjunction with solar thermal technology. A paddock on the property accommodates the ground source collector pipe work, some 3600m long, arranged in 12 trenches each 50m long.

Batts Hall is a large new build country house designed and constructed to incorporate the latest low energy technologies. For example the building structure itself enjoys very good thermal characteristics, by use of “Amvic” insulation-concrete-insulation sandwich walls.

As a result of a thorough value engineering exercise GECCO2 were asked to undertake the design and installation of the GSHP system, including all excavation and ground works. During the recent artic weather GECCO2 demonstrated their commitment to keeping the project on programme by working on through the blizzard conditions, which would have defeated many others.

Commenting on the project Matt Love, MD of GECCO2 said: “This is an exciting project. The installation will be commissioned ready for the commencement of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme. It makes full use of our MCS installer certification, which means the customer will benefit from RHI payments over a number of years. We expect momentum to gather around this scheme as more developers and homeowners capitalise on this available investment, mitigating the costs to clients associated with installing renewable heating technologies, while helping the Country shift to utilising more renewable energy sources.”

The GSHP system uses only Micro Certification Scheme (MCS) approved technology, which provides the customer with assurance that the GECCO2 installation meets a robust set of standards. Close liaison with mechanical services design and install contractor John Watson Sustainability Ltd, ensured correct integration with the other renewable technologies that the client is pioneering on this project.
