German stats show mixed fortunes in construction orders

24 May 11 Newly released statistics show that the overall value of orders received by Germany’s construction industry in March was up 2.1% from same month in 2010, but that demand fell in some sectors.

The report by the federal statistical office Destatis found that the total price-adjusted value of orders received by In building construction increased 5.8%, while demand for civil and underground engineering decreased 1.6%. The overal figure of 2.1% combines figures from building construction and civil and underground engineering businesses in Germany.

The number of employees amounted to 702,000 at the end of March 2011. That was a decrease of 1,200, or 0.2%, compared with March 2010.

The total turnover of the construction industry for period January to March 2011 was €15bn (£13bn), an increase of 31.9% above the level of the first three months of 2010. The number of people employed is the three month period rose by an average 1.5%.

Activity in the construction sector in the first quarter was much less affected by winter conditions than in the same quarter in 2010. In the first quarter of 2011, a total of 174.5 million more hours were worked on construction sites than in the corresponding period last year.
