Giant crane completes 6,000-mile voyage to NY bridge site

4 Feb 14 A ‘super crane’ has arrived in New York after a 6,000-mile journey from San Francisco Bay.

The crane began the trip in late December and will now be prepared in readiness for starting work in the spring on the construction of the US$3.1bn (£1.94bn) New NY Bridge, which will replace the Tappan Zee Bridge. The Left Coast Lifter – now dubbed ‘I Lift NY’ - has a boom length of 100m and a lifting capacity of more than 1,607t.

A crew of mariners guided the 122m-long crane along the west coast of the USA, through the Panama Canal and the Gulf of Mexico, and then up the east coast.

The bridge is being designed and built by Tappan Zee Constructors,  a consortium that includes Fluor, American Bridge, Granite and Traylor Bros together with designers HDR, Buckland & Taylor, URS and GZA.
