The start was confirmed after Northumberland County Council granted planning permission for the dvelopment this week.
Completion is scheduled for 2014.
The Ashington facility will become the new home to the company’s UK decorative paints operations. AkzoNobel brands include Dulux, Polycell and Cuprinol.
The high-tech factory will also help reduce the carbon footprint of construction and refurbishment projects by reducing energy consumption per litre of paint produced by 60%.
AkzoNobel’s UK country director Guy Williams said: “Receiving planning permission is another step along our timeline towards 2014, allowing us to start building on this new world-class facility. This investment highlights the importance of the north-east to AkzoNobel’s operations, placing the region at the heart of our UK manufacturing business for the long term.”
