Go-ahead for Cornish road scheme

22 Feb 13 Work to start a £26.8m road scheme in Cornwall has been given final approval from the Department for Transport.

Carillion was engaged for the job back in 2007 on an Early Contractor Involvement basis. With construction finally now to start, completion is scheduled for November 2014.

The scheme is expected to kick-start regeneration of the Camborne, Pool and Redruth area by providing a new east-west road to remove traffic from the A3047. It will also allow public transport improvements between Roskear and Barncoose.

The Department for Transport has agreed to fund more than half the project cost.

Local transport minister Norman Baker said: “The £16.1m we are putting into this scheme shows that the coalition government is serious about investing in the infrastructure the country needs to drive economic growth.”

The scheme involves the construction of a new road from Dolcoath to Dudnance Lane across the Red River valley and the old South Crofty mine site, including a new junction on Dudnance Lane. There will also be a new road built from Station Road to Wilson Way, removing traffic from Pool village centre, along with minor improvements to other roads in the area, including footways, cycleways and new lighting.

The Camborne-Pool-Redruth package was one of the schemes given funding approval last year as part of the spending review process.
