A survey carried out by YouGov on behalf of Greenpeace reveals the public consider the government to be merely average in its environment policies.
In May 2010 prime minister David Cameron said that he wanted the coalition to be “the greenest government ever". Greenpeace commissioned the poll to see to what extend voters think he is achieving that aim.
Out of a sample of 1738 voters, 2% consider the government to be the greenest ever and 10% think it is greener than most other governments have been. 53% said that the government is ‘about average’, while 9% reckon it is less green than most. 7% said it is one of the least green ever.
Among those who voted Conservative in 2010, 3% consider the government to be the greenest ever, 16% greener than most and 58% about average.
Asked about current safeguards that protect Britain’s wildlife and countryside, only 37% of voters think them about right, while 40% think them too weak and 4% too strong. Among Conservative voters, 54% think them about right, 30% too weak and 6% too strong.
