Graham underway on £16.9m South Shields pool complex

6 Apr 11 John Graham (Dromore) has started work on a £16.9m contract to build a leisure centre in South Shields, having seen off three other bidders.

The Pier Parade Pool leisure complex, including a 25m pool and a fitness gym, is part of South Tyneside borough council’s plan to regenerate the South Shields Foreshore. This work has already seen a £5m project to transform South Marine Park, with assistance from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Council leader Iain Malcolm said: "Graham is an established company in the leisure sector with a proven track record in delivering high profile contracts such as The Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh, the Edinburgh University Centre for Sports and Exercise and many prestigious swimming pools, leisure centres and hotel developments in the UK."

Graham executive chairman Michael Graham said: "We are delighted to have been awarded this prestigious contract and look forward to constructing a first class facility for the people of South Tyneside."
