Green Deal training fund set up

8 Mar 12 A £2.5m fund has been set up to train several hundred workers how to install solid wall insulation.

The programme is an initiative by training board CITB-ConstructionSkills to help the industry prepare for the Green Deal. CITB-ConstructionSkills is adding £500,000 from its growth fund to a £2m investment from the Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC.

It has also published common minimum technical competencies (CMTC) - standards of competency that Green Deal installers will have to meet to be able to retrofit energy efficiency measures to domestic properties under the scheme. These can be seen on the Cut the Carbon website http://cutcarbon.info/green_deal_cmtc

CITB-ConstructionSkills CEO Mark Farrar said:  “Today’s announcements represent a huge leap forward towards preparing the construction industry for the government’s flagship efficiency scheme.

“Training shortfalls have been identified as one of the main barriers to the success of the scheme. We have invested funds to tackle training shortages and unlock commercial opportunities for SMEs and we welcome DECC’s commitment to skills and training by doing the same thing. Supporting the training are the new common minimum technical competencies, which form part of the robust accreditation that will ensure Green Deal installers have the required level of competency to protect consumers from shoddy workmanship.”
