‘Green’ track laid for Australian light railway

9 Feb 22 Work is now under way to lay Australia’s longest stretch of ‘green track’ for a light rail project.

‘Green track’ features grass and vegetation between and along the tracks, instead of filling the space with concrete, asphalt or ballast.

The Parramatta Light Rail will be the first light rail service in NSW to feature grass ‘green track’.

The track designed to use 81 per cent less concrete in its construction while delivering environmental benefits. Claimed benefits include a reduction in air temperature in the area, minimising noise and glare, a better appearance, production of oxygen, filtering of dust in the air, a reduction in flooding and encouragement for biodiversity.

There will be 1.3 kilometres of green track laid in three areas across the 12km alignment, with grass also to be planted at two other areas.

The Zoysia ‘Nara’ grass species was selected after a 12-month testing process to assess growth rate and durability in Western Sydney conditions. As an Australian native species, Zoysia ‘Nara’ turf is highly durable and well-equipped to tolerate Parramatta’s soil and climatic conditions. A programmable, solar-powered irrigation system will also ensure the grass and groundcover along the track is kept hydrated.

Great River City Light Rail - a consortium between Transdev and CAF Rail Australia - will maintain and operate the light rail system, including the ongoing upkeep of the green track.
