Hanson Structherm EWI system completes five year refurbishment project

17 Apr 12 Hanson Structherm’s High Build external wall insulation (EWI) system has been used to complete a major housing refurbishment project in County Durham.

Almost 5,500 square metres of EWI was used to improve 89 two-storey Victorian brick terraced houses in Craghead.

It was the final phase of an extensive five-year project for County Durham Council, which is working to improve conditions for people in private housing in priority areas.

The contract was carried out by Westdale Services, whose managing director Malcolm Kitching said: “We chose the Hanson Structherm system because, after many years and many thousands of houses completed, we have always found it to be of the highest quality with a back-up service that is second to none.”

The EWI system includes a layer of 60mm phenolic insulation, which has greatly improved the thermal performance of the houses. They now need less fuel to heat them, reducing both CO2 emissions and on-going energy costs for residents.

In addition, Hanson Structherm’s Multirend finish was applied to the houses using differently coloured renders for the mortar layer and brick face layer to match the original brick work. The refurbishment programme also included new roofs, fascia boards, windows and doors, along with the installation of PV solar panels.
