Heathrow goes out to tender for £100m tunnel refurb

7 Mar 13 A contract to refurbish tunnels underneath Heathrow Airport is up for grabs with an estimated value of between £80m and £130m.

The proposed project comprises the refurbishment of both the main road tunnel and the cargo tunnel under the airport to provide new safety systems.

The scope of work includes the installation of ventilation equipment, fixed fire suppression, passive fire protection, fire and incident detection equipment, lighting systems, electrical systems, telephones and CCTV systems, emergency points, radio rebroadcast system, domestic water and fire mains, speed enforcement cameras, drainage, and emergency signing and tunnel closure systems.

Work is expected to take 38 months to complete.

The main tunnel, built in 1950s, is the primary entrance to the central terminal area. It is a 630m twin-bore road tunnel with two lanes per bore and two additional single lane side bores.

The cargo tunnel, built in 1960s, is an airside road tunnel. It is 830m long and comprises 630m of bored tunnel and 100m of cut and cover sections at each end
