Heijmans and Boskalis win €51m canal project

18 Apr 12 Heijmans and Boskalis have been provisionally awarded a €51m (£42m) contract for widening and deepening the Wilhelmina Canal and building a new lock.

The contract with the Municipality of Tilburg, the Province of Noord-Brabant and The Directorate-General for Public Works & Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat), is expected to be confirmed at the end of May.

The municipality and the province are working to improve access to the city by water, road and rail. Bringing the Wilhelmina Canal up to modern standards is one of the means of achieving this goal.

The project consists of widening and deepening the current canal, which is more than 4km long, building a new lock and removing an existin lock. Heijmans will assume responsibility for the construction of the new lock, while Boskalis will carry out the work on the canal.

Work will start in October 2013 and the new lock will become operational in May 2015. The entire project is to be completed in 2016.
