Helix project looks to Balfour Beatty

10 Apr 12 Balfour Beatty has been selected for a £13.5m contract to deliver part of the Helix project near Falkirk.

The Helix project is a £41m scheme to transform 350 hectares between Falkirk and Grangemouth in parkland for leisure use. Joint client is Falkirk Council, British Waterways Scotland and Central Scotland Forest Trust and funding is coming from the Big Lottery Fund’s Living Landmarks programme.

Elements of the project include a cycle network, a series of public artwork, including the Kelpies – two 30m high structures in the shape of two horses heads – and a canal hub and extension connecting Grangemouth with the Firth of Forth network.

Balfour Beatty will be responsible for delivering a new lock at the Kelpies as well as installing a visitors car park, a boat turning pool, an under-bridge to the M9 and footpaths.

Programme director Mike King said: “We were looking for a firm that has the reputation, expertise and experience to deliver this key element of the Helix and Balfour Beatty fit these criteria. Their track record reflects their ability to deliver on time and on budget and we look forward to seeing this stage of the project come together.”

Balfour Beatty regional managing director Adam Thomson added: “Balfour Beatty is delighted to be working on the Helix and to be delivering what will be an important scheme for the town and the wider region.”
