As previously reported last week, he regards fast-tracking the project as key to controlling costs and reining in the impact of price inflation. It will also deliver project benefits to northern cities earlier than currently envisaged.
Phase two of the project, from Birmingham to Leeds and Manchester, is currently programmed to follow on after phase one, the London-Birmingham section.
