Hong Kong backs plan for third runway

3 Jan 12 The next phase of planning a third runway in Hong Kong is set to start this quarter following public backing for the scheme.

Secretary for transport and housing Eva Cheng has welcomed the results of the Airport Authority’s public consultation on the Airport Master Plan 2030. It showed that most people support adding a third runway to the airport.

She said that there was a clear message that the majority of Hong Kong people want to see timely development of the airport as it is an important part of the economy, producing economic benefits and employment opportunities which are important for the city’s long-term competitiveness. “Now we have got the Airport Authority’s recommendation, our aim is to complete our own procedures. And of course, it is a very important decision to trigger the next stage of work. We aim to do that in the first quarter of next year,” she said.

The government will now study the economic, environmental and social aspects of developing a third runway.
