Hong Kong construction bodies to be streamlined

24 Feb 12 Hong Kong’s Development Bureau wants to combine its Construction Industry Council and the Construction Workers Registration Authority to boost the industry's sustainable development.

It has gazetted a bill, which it said will support the government's huge infrastructure programme. It wants to provide flexibility for the council to finance educational, publicity, research or other programmes relating to occupational safety and health, environmental protection or sustainable development in the construction industry.

The Construction Workers Registration ordinance will also be amended to extend the period for the renewal of worker registration from three months to six.

It said the bill will allow the workers registration card issued to store and display information of other construction-related cards and certificates, to reduce the number of cards a worker needs to carry at work.

The secretary for development will table the bill at the Legislative Council on 29 February.
