Hughes & Salvidge win by a degree

14 Apr 11 Southampton University awarded Hughes & Salvidge the £3million plus demolition contract to remove asbestos, demolish the structure, and install drainage and piling works at this landmark seven storey 30,000 m2 former biomedical facility.

The project is part of a wider £150m scheme to develop Southampton’s Maritime Centre of Excellence.

The client’s contract administrators who evaluated the Hughes & Salvidge winning tender submission are, project managers Buro Four Project Services and Aecom company Davis Langdon quantity surveyors.

The unusual concrete structure requires particular attention to the behaviour of the post-tensioned frame.  Working adjacent to a residential area requires methods to minimise disruption. Noise, dust and vibration are constantly monitored.  Hughes & Salvidge’s experience was demonstrated to the client at prequalification and mid tender stages, that all potential risks will be addressed & mitigated.   95%+ of materials arising from the redundant structure will be recycled or reused on site.

Hughes & Salvidge’s competitive advantage has been built on the ability to understand the business needs of customers who are increasingly looking for delivery partners with a high level of expertise and technical know-how to complete the job safely, quickly and effectively.
