The project is located in the Muharraq area of the Bahrain and the ultimate client is the Ministry of Works.  Work is under a 27-year build, own, operate and transfer scheme and will be delivered by Muharraq STP,  a special purpose company made up of Samsung Engineering; operator United Utilities and Invest AD.

The objective of the scheme is to collect and treat waste water to a high standard suitable for the treated effluent to be reused.  The project includes intercepting 24 existing pumping stations and diverting the flows through new waste water connection networks to a 16km- long, 1.8m-diameter micro-tunnelled deep gravity sewer which discharges to a terminal lifting station located at the head of the new sewage treatment plant.

Hyder has been commissioned to carry out full detail design of the sewage treatment plant, deep gravity sewer, waste water connection networks, intermediate lift station, terminal lift station and long sea outfall.  Hyder was also awarded civil, architectural and structural design and review of the process and design for the sludge incinerator plant.
