Irish gallery refurb to create 300 jobs

28 Jan 13 Ireland’s minister for arts Jimmy Deenihan has announced that a multi-million euro refurbishment of the National Gallery of Ireland is to be carried out over the next three years.

The investment is the largest single refurbishment project of the gallery since its opening in 1864. It is expected to generate approximately 300 full-time construction and specialist jobs. The total project value is in the region of €20m (£17m) with delivery of the completed project due by late 2015.

The project includes a comprehensive refurbishment of the historic core of the National Gallery and installation of climate, heating, fire suppression, electrical, lighting and security systems. Victorian features and spaces within the building previously unseen by the public will be opened up. The scheme also includes protection and preservation of the building itself.

"This is the single largest transformation at the National Gallery of Ireland in 150 years,” said Deenihan. “I am delighted to announce this extensive refurbishment, which will deliver both a world-leading national gallery and also generate 300 full-time construction and specialist skills jobs.”

Tenders for the completion of the refurbishment works are currently being drafted.
