ISG heats up with £2 million Pontefract fire station win

10 Mar 11 ISG has been awarded a £2 million project to build a new fire station in Pontefract in a continuation of the contractor’s successful relationship with West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service.

Most recently, ISG completed the £3 million Safety Central facility in Bramley, Leeds – the UK’s very first centre of excellence for safety awareness and education. This latest scheme follows a comprehensive review by the fire safety organisation into how it can further enhance efficiencies and emergency response times for households in Knottingley and Pontefract.

Occupying a strategic site in Pontefract, the new fire station provides the service with excellent access to key arterial routes, and the region’s major road network. ISG is due to commence construction of the part two-storey steel frame building imminently, with the project incorporating a large external works package, including the construction of a steel frame training tower, for simulated rescue exercises, and highways improvements to enhance accessibility to the station.

The new Pontefract station has been designed to achieve a BREEAM ‘very good’ environmental performance rating and incorporates a range of high performance building materials. A rainwater harvesting and re-use system will also be installed to collect rainwater, which is then used to flush toilets within the station, and roof mounted solar panels will provide domestic hot water. In addition to housing two modern fire appliances behind roller shutter doors, the building provides en-suite accommodation for fire fighters working shift patterns, as well as a gym, recreational area, meeting rooms and administrative offices. The project is scheduled for completion in early 2012.

John Gittins, ISG's regional managing director, commented: "ISG has forged a close working relationship with West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service over a number of years delivering both new build fire stations and innovative educational facilities. This latest scheme in Pontefract represents a major investment in the organisation’s core infrastructure as it responds to the modern demands placed upon this key emergency service.”
