ISG Jackson takes £2.5 million church scheme in Essex

10 Feb 11 ISG Jackson has secured a £2.5 million project to extend and enhance existing facilities at All Saints’ Church in Woodford Green, Essex.

Both church and community facilities will be targeted for modernisation, with major improvements made to disabled access and special needs provision. Focusing on the adjacent church hall, the contractor will also carry out a comprehensive programme of refurbishment and modernisation works that will transform the accommodation and dramatically improve the environmental performance of the building.

The project sees ISG Jackson construct a new two-storey annexe structure with basement to the side and rear of the existing church hall building. This extension will provide additional function space, community meeting rooms and a new media suite housed in the basement. A number of redundant outbuildings will also be demolished to improve access and open up the site.

As part of the measures to enhance the hall’s green credentials, ISG Jackson will re-roof the building, installing insulation and a modern breathable performance membrane, whilst re-using as many of the original roof tiles as possible. A number of glazed units will be installed in the roof to maximise the amount of natural light entering the church hall and the existing chimney stack will be taken down and rebuilt.

The hall’s basement boiler room will be stripped out and remodelled to make way for a new, highly efficient biomass boiler system, which uses wood pellets to heat the building. All of the existing mechanical and electrical services will also be upgraded to enhance efficiencies and reduce overall running costs. The final element sees ISG Jackson build a single-storey glazed reception structure, incorporating a welcome area and coffee bar and linking the church hall with the grade II listed church.

Stuart Talbot, divisional director for ISG Jackson Special Projects, commented: “The redevelopment of the church hall represents a major investment by the church council into its facilities. A great deal of effort and determination has gone into turning these plans into reality and we are delighted to be involved in a project that will bring important community benefits to the area.”
