ISG revamps Essex college

1 Feb 13 ISG has been awarded a £4.7m project to upgrade the main Benfleet Campus building at Seevic College in Essex.

Catering for more than 3,000 further and higher education students across three campuses in Benfleet and Basildon, Seevic College offers degrees in partnership with two universities. Starting on site in February, ISG’s 35-week modernisation scheme will comprehensively upgrade teaching facilities at the Benfleet Campus.

ISG will erect a new steel frame around the existing building, creating more internal space and supporting a new curved roof. The entrance will be remodelled with a glazed atrium and the façade re-clad.  A courtyard extension will provide additional space and ISG will reconfigure the internal layout of the building to maximise space.

The refurbishment includes mechanical and electrical infrastructure upgrade and solar glazing to minimise heat loss.

ISG regional managing director Ian Gifford said: “The vast majority of this complex, phased modernisation project will be carried out while the campus remains open to staff and students, and this presents a range of programme challenges. The key structural work will be undertaken during the Easter holiday period, where much of the steel frame and roof structure will be erected, but for the main part we will be working in close cooperation with Seevic College to ensure we minimise the impact of this major redevelopment.”
