Amlin plans to consolidate several offices in Chelmsford into a single, purpose-built centre.

ISG has already carried out enabling works, including demolition of three buildings on the Victoria Road site. Much of the demolition material will be re-used across the site during the initial ground works phase, the contractor said.

The new building will be a five-storey concrete frame structure, with piled foundations and undercroft parking. It will house 100,000 sq ft of office space, mostly open plan.

It is targeting a BREEAM Very Good environmental rating, with high performance building materials specified throughout and roof mounted photovoltaic panels to generate electricity. Externally, the building has extensive curtain walling and rainscreen cladding panels.

ISG said that the project presented “a range of logistical challenges associated with the tightly constrained nature of the site and extremely limited storage space available”. It will therefore be using just-in-time (JIT) delivery for incoming materials and will initially locate its temporary infrastructure off site, relocating once the frame of the new building is up.

Alan McCarthy-Wyper, managing director of ISG’s construction business, said: “This latest win plays to our considerable strengths delivering challenging new build office projects, developing innovative solutions and intelligent working practices to succeed in complex environments.”
