ISG wins latest Stockton education scheme

7 Jun 11 ISG has secured its latest project with Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council, taking a £1.8 million scheme to extend and refurbish education facilities at Whinstone Primary School.

A key element of the project is the provision of new purpose-built classroom accommodation, enabling the school to move out and demolish a number of temporary classroom blocks across the site.

The first phase of the redevelopment sees ISG demolish one of these temporary structures - a timber frame building, used most recently as a nursery, and construct a single-storey extension with a link to the main school building. The steel frame structure will house six new classrooms, an ICT suite, practical room and a large full height multi-use hall.

The building has been designed to be highly efficient and environmentally sustainable, incorporating photo voltaic cells and a wind turbine to generate emission free electricity. The extension will be passively ventilated, via roof mounted wind catchers, and a number of roof lights will maximise the amount of natural light entering the building. Architecturally, the new structure will complement the existing built environment and features a brick façade with elements of timber cladding, coloured render panels and a pitched tiled roof.

During the summer holiday period, ISG will commence an intensive second phase of works at the school, comprising a comprehensive strip out and refurbishment of three existing classroom zones in the main building. Classrooms will be reconfigured, extended and fitted out to create more spacious teaching accommodation. Externally, ISG will form a new car parking area, which will effectively double the number of spaces available to staff and visitors.

Once the extension has been completed, pupils will relocate to the new facility from existing temporary classroom accommodation at the rear of the school site. ISG will then demolish this timber frame structure and landscape the area, with the entire project scheduled for completion by the end of the year.

John Gittins, ISG's regional managing director, commented: “Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council’s continued programme of investment in education provision is presenting a range of opportunities for ISG and I’m delighted that the business is proving successful in securing a significant proportion of this work.”
