The contract from Werkmaatschappij Almere-Amsterdam involves developing a concept study and business case for the IJmeerverbinding public transport corridor over the IJmeer (IJ-Lake) east of the City of Amsterdam. Jacobs is executing the project from its offices in London, England in partnership with Dutch management consultants APPM and design bureau POSAD.
Led by Jacobs, the team is asked by the government to develop a viable plan for a bridge crossing and a 33km metro line.
The team's final transportation concept study and business case is due to be submitted to the city of Almere in September for subsequent public discussion. The preferred option is likely to incorporate best ideas from the three separate consortiums. It is to be presented to the Dutch federal cabinet in 2012.
The planned new corridor, named the IJmeerlijn, links the city of Almere on IJ-Lake to Amsterdam, 15km to the southwest. Almere, which was founded only 30 years ago on manmade land in IJsselmeer Lake, is rapidly becoming the Netherlands' fifth largest city, with a projected population of up to 350,000 in 2030.
The IJmeerlijn is expected to be a vital part of the existing metro and heavy rail infrastructure in the Amsterdam metropolitan area.
