Keeping in step with Volvo

25 Mar 11 Keeping in step with the market in the current climate has prompted I & H Brown Ltd of Perth to resize part of its mobile plant fleet with Volvo A30E articulated haulers and a wheeled EW160C excavator.

I & H Brown Ltd of Perth are no strangers to running Volvo articulated haulers and more recently Volvo excavators with favourable results in terms of fuel consumption and cost per tonne moved. And according to Plant Director Robert Brown, the thirty tonne A30E has become the optimum sized hauler for the majority of the contracts currently undertaken by the well established civil engineering company based in the heart of Scotland.  “In general we see job sites getting smaller and typically we work on landfill sites, land reclamation projects, and road building contracts and currently there is little utilisation for the larger 40 tonne capacity trucks,” he commented. “In particular with the bad and generally wet weather conditions we’ve experienced of late, most sites favour a medium capacity truck fitted with floatation tyres – in our case Bridgestone VLTS, and the A30E fits the bill.”

The latest package includes four A30E trucks heralding the last of the E series prior to the shift to the Tier IIIB engine which, Robert Brown has no problem in accepting, in light of the imminent arrival of the new F series trucks. “After all, we know the current product from a maintenance point of view and when it’s time to change we’ll probably have a wider audience in the resale market,” he continued.

Joining the four trucks is a sixteen tonne EW160C wheeled excavator and whilst I & H Brown run Volvo crawler machines, this is their first venture with a wheeled variant. “We did hold a competitive evaluation with the major brands, but at the end of the day the final choice was down to operator preference,” said Robert. The machine has been supplied with a Miller twin lock quick hitch for site acceptance and is being deployed on major road construction projects in the Central Belt of Scotland.
