Kent power station approved

26 Jan 11 Energy Minister Charles Hendry has given the go-ahead for ScottishPower to build a 1,000MW gas-fired power station on the Kingsnorth industrial estate in Kent, on the north side of the Medway. Project costs is expected to be £500m.

The site is next to the existing 800MW Damhead Creek gas-fired power station. The new Damhead Creek 2 combined cycle gas turbine plant could generate enough electricity to supply almost 1.5 million homes.

Mr Hendry said:  “This power plant will play a vital role in providing secure electricity supplies for the southeast, as well as creating jobs in the region. It will be one of the most efficient power plants in the world, and be built carbon capture ready, which means that eventually CO2 produced by the plant could be captured and transported for storage under the North Sea.

“There is also potential, in the future, to use the heat created by the plant to supply the local area.”

Roger Seshan, commercial development director at ScottishPower, said: “This is a major achievement and an important milestone for the proposed project. Our immediate plans will see further development work carried out at the site in the coming months. This will fully establish our plans for the site and determine the future timetable for the project.”
