However, the bulk of the work will be done not in London but Sheffield as the new station is to be constructed off site and assembled on location to minimise disruption to residents and Docklands Light Railway (DLR) services.
Main construction of the new station (contract C520) is being undertaken by Laing O’Rourke Construction, which will transport prefabricated sections from its Sheffield facility to Custom House for re-assembly.
The Crossrail station will be built on the site of the former North London Line station and will include a new ticket hall, an interchange with the Docklands Light Railway and step-free access between the platforms and street level. It will also have a roof made from transparent plastic material, EFTE, similar to the material that used at the Eden Project in Cornwall.
Work on the site is scheduled to finish in December 2015.
In a busy week of mobilisation for Laing O’Rourke, the contractor is also starting on a £150m contract to widen a seven mile stretch of the A453 in Nottinghamshire. This work will run to summer 2015.
