Lend Lease hits its sustainability targets

22 Mar 11 Lend Lease’s project management and construction business in the UK has beaten the construction sustainability targets that it set itself for 2010.

The company identified five key areas in 2007 and set itself targets that it wanted to meet in the following three years for waste, carbon and energy, design, responsible sourcing and community.

Headlining the business’s achievements during the three-year scheme is:

  • reducing the amount of construction waste going to landfill by 70%
  • reducing direct carbon emissions by 22%
  • almost all timber used on sites is now FSC certified or recycled
  • helping more than 3000 people into work
  • 77% of projects achieved BREEAM Very Good or Excellent
  • ambassador for new responsible sourcing standards for key construction materials.

Head of sustainability Pascal Mittermaier said: “The project management & construction business has surpassed all expectations in sustainability including those of the government, during a difficult three-year period for the industry. We have continually worked with suppliers and contractors over the last three years to explain our requirements and help them meet our standards.

“The results are outstanding and we set out to raise the bar within the business and prove how being passionate about sustainability can help improve the bottom line with cost savings and increased contract wins. I hope our achievements will also help raise the bar within the industry.”
