London faces high-rise boom

13 Mar 14 At least 236 tall buildings of 20 or more storeys are currently proposed, approved or under construction in London, new research has found.

The study was conducted by property consultant GL Hearn for New London Architecture, which describes itself as ‘an independent forum for debate about the future shape of the city’.

There are 33 buildings between 40-49 storeys and 22 buildings of 50 storeys or more planned for London. Approval has been given for 48% of the 236 towers and 19% are already under construction.

Housing rather than office accommodation is the main driver, it appears, as 80% of the planned towers are residential blocks.

Tower Hamlets, traditionally one of London’s less affluent boroughs, is one of the biggest areas of planned development, with 23% of the projects planned for there.
