The 5m-deep cavity between junctions 5 and 6 has swallowed up 40t of pea shingle, which will stabilise it while geotechnical investigations continue.
There are still lane closures but the motorway has now reopened to traffic in both directions. The Highways Agency and its contractors worked throughout yesterday to establish the cause and extent of the hole that appeared in the central reservation the previous afternoon.
The geotechnical assessment, which is likely to take at least another 48 hours, will be carried out in and around the hole.
