Making way for Crown Place

7 Mar 13 Ocon Construction has begun work on the new £50m Crown Place student accommodation scheme for the University of Liverpool.

The new student halls are being built on the site of the university’s old Veterinary Sciences Building, which was pulled down by Demolition Network over the course of nine weeks at the back end of last year, completing on 10 December.

As much as 99% of the fabric of the old building is being re-used on site. The brick and concrete was crushed to create the 6F2 aggregate for the piling mat and all and timber was recycled. An estimated 12,000 tonnes of recycled aggregate was produced.

Demolition Network, a young company founded in 2008 by Paul Edwards, also managed to recycle much of the old building’s contents, with tables and chairs going to local charities and changing room lockers ending up at Oldham rugby club. The Crown Place development will provide accommodation for 1,259 students in three buildings of seven, nine and 10 storeys.
