Delays hit Inverness bridge lift

8 Apr 13 An overnight bridge lift near Inverness was delayed over the weekend after technical problems.

Mammoet was contracted by main contractor Morgan Sindall to raise an 84m-span pedestrian and cycle bridge over the A9 alongside the new Inverness campus development.

The so-called Golden Bridge was supposed to be lifted in on Saturday night/Sunday morning, having being moved from the campus to its final position by self-propelled modular trailers (SPMTs). Subsequent attempts to raise the 290-tonne load into place failed, despite it being a relatively routine operation for a company like Mammoet, which has raised everything from the London Eye to the sunken Russian nuclear submarine The Kursk.

It is understood that, contrary to reports, there were no problems with the lifting equipment.

By Monday morning the operation was finally completed and the A9 and all slip roads were once again open to traffic.
